Ernest Hemingway said, “We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.”

While you can never say that you have mastered eBook writing, there are certain things that can help you significantly improve your craft. Avoiding common eBook writing mistakes is one of them! Seems obvious? Theoretically, it is, but writing an eBook is such a long and comprehensive task that writers often end up making certain mistakes without even realizing it.

In your excitement to become a published author, you MAY overlook certain elements and make mistakes. This, in turn, can affect the quality of your work and harm your reputation as a writer. To help you avoid it, we are highlighting some of the common eBook writing mistakes that you should avoid.

6 eBook Writing Mistakes That Can Be Avoided Easily

Avoid these mistakes to make sure your eBook gets a warm reception, both by your audience and the critics, helping you achieve the goals you’re writing it for:

1. Neglecting the Readers

No matter what type of eBook you’re writing (fiction or non-fiction) and what your goal is, you want your book to be read. For this, you need to make sure that the topic you are writing on is something people want to read about. For fiction, you need to ensure that the story is compelling enough that it will hold the readers’ attention until the end.

2. Trying to Please Everyone

While it’s crucial to consider the readers while writing an eBook, DO NOT try to please everyone with your book. It’s not possible, so don’t waste your time and effort. People have different tastes and preferences. You can’t expect everyone to like what you have to offer. Many people didn’t like Game of Thrones, and many do not like the fast-food giants, like Dominos and Burger King. But, this doesn’t mean they are not good.

Every product caters to a specific audience. Your eBook is also your product, so as the creator of that product, your goal should be to identify your target audience and try your best to please them. Otherwise, you’ll get carried away, and your book will be a hodgepodge of random ideas.

3. Editing or Proofreading While Writing

If there’s anything that could be worse than procrastination for book writers, it’s editing or proofreading while writing the first draft. Those who have made this mistake know how it can impede creativity and make you lose your stream of thoughts.

If you’re used to doing it, it can be very difficult to break that habit. But, take my word for it, it will make a big difference in your speed as well as the quality of your work. Just focus on writing when you’re working on the first draft. Pour out your ideas on paper and leave the rest for later.

Think of it this way – when miners excavate gemstones from rocks and mines, they often have impurities and are in bad shape, overall. They are refined, cut, and polished before presenting to customers, not at the time of excavation. At that time, miners only focus on finding the hidden gems.

Similarly, when you are writing, focus on bringing out your valuable ideas and putting them on paper. Refine and polish them later.

4. Thinking You Don’t Need an Editor

Even Ernest Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald worked with a professional editor, and you still think you don’t need to?

Tiffany Madison, a writer, communication expert, and solutions strategist, aptly describes the struggle of editing your own work. She said, “While writing is like a joyful release, editing is a prison where the bars are my former intentions and the abusive warden my own neuroticism.”

For writers, eBooks are like their children, and that means they often fail to notice and overlook flaws in their creations.

A professional editor reviews your work from an objective perspective. They not only offer a fresh pair of eyes, but they also offer a fresh perspective. Also, they are trained in such a way that they can look at both the bigger picture and fine details. Simply put, a professional editor can help you find flaws, mistakes, and shortcomings in the core concept, structure of the book, flow of ideas, strength of arguments, quality of writing, language, grammar, spelling, and typography. Therefore, do not skip this step thinking that you don’t an editor because you have a strong command over the English language, or you can write well.

5. Trying to Do It All Yourself

There are no two views about the rise of the digital world and self-publishing has made things a lot easier for book writers. They don’t have to reach out to multiple publishers, send them the manuscript, and then wait several weeks for their response, praying that someone would accept to publish their book. However, this doesn’t mean that the writers are supposed to travel on this path all alone. If you want your eBook to make a mark, do what you’re best at, i.e., writing, and let others do what they know the best.  There’s nothing wrong with hiring professionals for editing, proofreading, cover design, and publishing. Many eBook writing services also offer these services, along with writing. Find a reliable one and outsource all the tasks that you find hard to the professionals.

6. Not Having a Deadline

Procrastination is one of the major reasons why many aspiring book writers fail to become published writers. It can become an occupational hazard for writers. Therefore, it’s important to set a deadline and stick to it.

If you don’t set a deadline, you will never finish your eBook – it’s as simple as that!

I recommend setting deadlines for everything – completing the first draft and the second draft, designing the cover page, editing and proofreading, formatting, and finally, publishing.

Mark Batterson, an American author, said, “Dreams without deadlines are dead in the water. Deadlines are really lifelines to achieving your goals.”

Don’t let your dream of becoming a published author remains a dream. Set deadlines to convert it into a reality!

eBook writing is a long and difficult journey. It is common for writers to lose focus and motivation during it. They also often stumble upon roadblocks and get disheartened.
