Council’s Trading Standards have acquired upwards of £1.5m proceeds of crime order against a family selling illegal teeth whitening products at The Royal Welsh.
John Barry Hargreaves, along with his wife Jean and son Matthew, were arrested for running an illegal teeth whitening business. The family face a lengthy jail time, unless they pay up the entirety of what they made in the business.

The order against the family was made during a hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court.
The council carried out a thorough financial investigation into the benefits the family had acquired during the course of the illegal teeth whitening operation. The Council had already restrained property in the region of £2m.
During the hearing, it was made known to the court that the family made upwards of £2.5m from their actions.
The Judge ordered Matthew Hargreaves to pay back £1,096,500 within 90 days. Failure to pay means he faces up to seven years in prison.
In addition, the Judge orderd Jean Hargreaves and John Hargreaves to pay £519,940 and £995 respectively. They were also given a 90 days window to pay or face five-year jail term and a three-month jail term respectively.
The Judge also put a compliance order mandating Matthew Hargreaves to make timely updates to the council in regards to selling the respective properties and making payments.

Judge Harris-Jenkins applauded the Powys County Council’s Trading Standards for bringing such crimes to light and protecting the consumers from harmful products. The Judge extended his commendation to all investigating officers and staffs of trading standards involved in the process.
“We take pride in protecting the consumers, and we take our job seriously. We are here to protect the general public from unsafe goods,” said Cllr James Evans, Cabinet Member for Trading Standards,
“This is a strong message to criminals and other individuals engaged in fraudulent acts. They should stop or face consequences for their crimes,” James added.
