You’ve probably heard of the manga being read “backward.” However, it is not entirely true, as they are simply read in the direction of Japanese writing. It is written from right to left and from top to bottom, which is far from our western system.
To help the Spanish public, there are editions that westernize the sense of reading (as in the first edition of Dragon Ball), but the original version always tends to gain more followers. So you have to get used to it, which is not really a problem when you know it.
So remember to grab the manga from the last page of the western sense to start. Typically, the inside of the first page contains a message from the author, and the following pages are dedicated to the characters, story development, and index. There is no room for big mistakes!
Like a comic book or comic, each page of the manga is divided into several bullets, which the mangaka has arranged according to your tastes. So each page is different. Perhaps the only issue that may be difficult to master at first is the order of the bullets.
If the bullets are at the same height, you will simply read them from the right to the left, and so on. Repeat this step for each line until you reach the bullet at the bottom left of the page.
Similarly, if the thumbnails are arranged in a more complex way, always follow the diagonal up-right down-left. Don’t pay special attention even if there are bullets that are bigger: size doesn’t matter; First, read the tables that precede them in the order of the manga.
The order of the sandwiches follows the same logic of reading from right to left and from top to bottom. Sometimes the order of the dialogue isn’t even the most important thing, so don’t be afraid of getting lost – nothing happens.
Usually, bullets on a page are placed on a classic white background. However, it changes when the background is black: in this case, it is a flashback (in most cases) and you will notice by the total change of context and by a small box that places the action in the past.
It can also be used for a dream or an alternate reality, depending on the complexity of the scenario you are reading. In any case, keep in mind that this process is also used for American comics, so if you already know, no problem.
The transition background is a gradient background between black and white, which means that we leave a temporal ellipse. Therefore, the author will use it to insert a flashback (from white to black) or remove it (from black to white).
Japanese graphic codes
- Understand Japanese manga.
- Observe everything to understand how to read Japanese manga.
- The facial expressions of the characters
- Mangakas use facial expressions a lot to describe a character’s feelings. They are encoded in Japanese culture and can be difficult to understand for one who has never started in manga culture. If the smile or anger are feelings that can be easily transmitted by seeing certain expressions, there are others that are more complex.
The sigh is represented by a character who closes his eyes, opens his mouth, has a sad look and lets out a small cloud that means he blows (a manpu)
In an anime, it can be easier thanks to the sounds that accompany the image, but in a manga, it is more complicated.
Blushes on the face show that a character is blushing, in a romantic or embarrassing situation
It is not easy to show a blushing character in black and white. In addition, this fact of blushing is really marked in the Japanese spirit and we find it a lot in the Shojo.
Excessive nosebleed of a character means he is excited.

Except in a fight, a nosebleed (mainly from a child …) means that you are excited by something you have seen, by a situation, or by a context. Sanji is a clear example of this.
